Thirty-six percent of American families struggle to afford diapers – experiencing diaper insecurity. This leads to many keeping diapers on infants longer than in healthy and recommended, using non-diaper materials, and even using bleach to reuse disposable diapers. An estimate 60% of the families experiencing diaper insecurity miss work or school because they didn’t have enough diapers for childcare or to get through the day.
Families struggling to afford diapers often fall short by about 25-50 diapers per month. The Utah Diaper Bank attempts to fill this gap through diaper donations. A $10 donation supplies enough diapers to fill the gap for one child for one month.
The Utah Diaper Bank is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, all-volunteer organization that was founded in 2013 after realizing that no safety-net program covered diapers for those in need. Since then, the Utah Diaper Bank has gone from distributing 11,000 diapers in their first year to shipping close to 1.3 million diapers in 2022. These diapers went to 40 non-profit and government agencies along the Wasatch front and to an additional sixteen Utah cities outside the Wasatch front and back. However, that’s still much less than Utah’s diaper need which is estimated to be more than 2.5-million diapers per year.
